What materials are used to manufacture ceramic femoral heads?
Modern ceramic femoral heads are commonly manufactured from alumina-based ceramics, zirconia, or alumina matrix composites such as zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA). The Orthovasive Ceramic Head uses BIOLOX® Delta, an advanced alumina matrix composite combining alumina with zirconia to provide high hardness, wear resistance, and improved fracture toughness.
How do ceramic implants contribute to smooth joint movement?
Ceramic has a highly smooth surface, high hardness, low friction, and excellent wear resistance. These properties help facilitate smooth articulation between the femoral head and acetabular bearing surface while minimizing wear.
